This may look like a bowl of white, chicken chili, but it’s really so much more. It’s a bowl of friendship. Last Sunday night, our friends, Mr. and Mrs. Teacher, came to retrieve their child from our care and to return one of our own children back to our care. A child exchange. Getting our own child back would have been enough, but Mr. Teacher arrived with his famous chili. A full pot just for us. We were deeply appreciative. It surely beat the pancakes I had planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Teacher are really something special. Got trouble? They will pray. Need advice? Theirs is practical. Your child having trouble in school? That’s their specialty! Got an idea for a new program, but don’t know how to give it legs? They’ve built several from the ground up.
This couple has it all. They are well-respected education professionals. They have a passion for strengthening marriages. They love families. They are terrific company. And they are completely underwhelmed by material things. They’re just cool.

Checkered was oohing and inhaling the chili by the time I took my first bite. He kept muttering things like, “Way to go, Mr. Teacher!” and, “That’s a homerun, Mr. Teacher!” I took a bite and it was the perfect blend of flavors…sooo good. Then my tongue and esophagus spontaneously combusted and I lost the ability to taste anything. Nobody warned my innocent tongue that the Teachers cook spicy food!! Such a loss for me, but it was really good while it lasted.
